How Humana usually covers orthopedic surgery

Many Humana plans include some coverage for orthopedic surgery when it treats a specific problem, such as back or neck pain, an injury, or limited movement. What you actually pay depends on your plan: the yearly visit limit, your copay or coinsurance, and how much of your deductible is left.

Humana no longer sells employer health plans. Most Humana members today have a Humana Medicare Advantage plan, which must cover at least what Original Medicare covers; Humana also runs Medicaid plans in some states.

Being in network matters most. A clinic that is in network for your plan bills your insurer directly at the agreed rate. Out of network, you may pay far more or all of it.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the clinic is in network for your exact Humana plan, not just the insurer
  • How many orthopedic surgery visits your plan allows each year
  • Your copay or coinsurance per visit, and whether your deductible applies first
  • Whether your plan needs a referral from your doctor first

The clinic we connect you with checks all of this with Humana before your first visit, so you know the cost up front.

Common questions

Do I need a referral?

It depends on your plan type. Many PPO plans don't need one; many HMO and marketplace plans do. The clinic will check for you.

Will the visit be fully covered?

Usually you pay a copay or a share of the cost, especially before your deductible is met. The clinic will tell you the amount before you book.

What if my plan doesn't cover orthopedic surgery?

Some plans cover related care instead, such as physical therapy. Many clinics also offer self-pay rates. Tell us in the form and the clinic will go through your options.
