What Medicare covers for acupuncture

Medicare Part B covers acupuncture only for chronic low back pain: pain that has lasted 12 weeks or more, has no known cause, and isn't linked to surgery or pregnancy.

It covers up to 12 treatments in 90 days, and 8 more if you're improving, up to 20 a year. Medicare can't pay licensed acupuncturists directly, so the care must be billed by a qualifying doctor, nurse practitioner or physician assistant. You usually pay 20% after the Part B deductible.

Being in network matters most. A clinic that is in network for your plan bills your insurer directly at the agreed rate. Out of network, you may pay far more or all of it.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the clinic is in network for your exact Medicare plan, not just the insurer
  • How many acupuncture visits your plan allows each year
  • Your copay or coinsurance per visit, and whether your deductible applies first
  • Whether your plan needs a referral from your doctor first

The clinic we connect you with checks all of this with Medicare before your first visit, so you know the cost up front.

Common questions

Do I need a referral?

Original Medicare doesn't use referrals, but your doctor or other provider must certify that therapy is medically necessary. Medicare Advantage plans, especially HMOs, often need a referral or approval. The clinic will check for you.

Will the visit be fully covered?

Usually you pay a copay or a share of the cost, especially before your deductible is met. The clinic will tell you the amount before you book.

What if my plan doesn't cover acupuncture?

Some plans cover related care instead, such as physical therapy. Many clinics also offer self-pay rates. Tell us in the form and the clinic will go through your options.
